Evolution of Smart Manufacturing: Lessons for India’s Leap Ahead to Advanced Factory Automation

Abstract

While elements of automation have been found in certain manufacturing industries for hundreds of years, what we now refer to as Smart Manufacturing has become widely available only in recent years due to tremendous advances in computing power, advanced sensors, and robotics. The semiconductor industry has been the leader in developing and advancing smart manufacturing technologies.

Factory automation in the semiconductor industry has evolved from fabs writing their own proprietary software programs, to the current best practice of deploying commercial, fully integrated, out-of-the box Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) systems that can operate factories in "lights-out" full automation mode.

New entrants to semiconductor manufacturing, such as India, have the opportunity to benefit from decades of investment in the development of Smart Manufacturing capabilities by including out-of-the-box fully integrated CIM technologies into their factories from the beginning, thus improving time to market while optimizing yield, cost and output.
